ENGRAM
Throughout the process of sketching, prototyping, refining, enhancing, and revising information, we overcame problems and explored potential solutions that ensured a successful and refined final piece. The Form Theory project presented an opportunity of collaborative team working to utilize our diverse skill sets, personal design philosophies and connect them together to craft a finished chair.
The term, “Engram” was brought into the art world by a German historian Aby Warburg. Warburg pushed the term to begin meaning avisual representation of a psychology of a time. His work was considered some of the first “visual studies” where all aspects of culture that are visible contains insights in the psychology behind it. Our team developed a concise design philosophy reflective of combining contemporary and historical design principles, intersections between graphic and industrial design, and the convergence between ergonomics and material choices.
Placed in the gallery space of Chiquola, our downtown location, each chair prototype was put on display and accompanied by a summary of each design philosophy. The exhibit was one of two gallery shows to end our Annual Art+Design Week (ADWK).
